The South Bend Cubs, the High-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, have had a mixed performance over the past week. Here are some highlights and updates from their recent games:
Back-and-Forth Classic Sets Attendance Record
On July 25, the South Bend Cubs set a new single-game attendance record at Four Winds Field, with 8,169 fans packing the ballpark. Despite the electric atmosphere, the Cubs fell to the Peoria Chiefs in a thrilling 5-3 game. The Cubs initially took the lead with a home run by Brian Kalmer, but Peoria answered back with a three-run homer by Joshua Baez. The Cubs managed to tie the game in the 7th inning, but Peoria scored two runs in the 9th to secure the win.
Dominating Victory Over Peoria
The Cubs bounced back with a dominating 8-4 victory over the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night. Brian Kalmer had a standout performance with a five-RBI game, including a grand slam. This win marked the third victory for the Cubs in the first four games of the week against Peoria.
Series Finale Against Peoria
In the series finale on Sunday, the Cubs faced off against the Peoria Chiefs again. Despite a career moment for Rafael Morel, the Cubs fell short in an extra-inning rally, losing 6-5. This loss concluded the series with the Cubs still having an opportunity for a series victory.
Road Series Against Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
After a 9-game homestand, the Cubs are set to hit the road for the first time since the All-Star break. They will face the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, managed by Victor Estevez, a former South Bend Silver Hawk.
Overall, the South Bend Cubs have shown resilience and determination in their recent games, setting attendance records and delivering exciting performances. Despite some losses, they continue to strive for success in the Minor League Baseball scene.
