Everett AquaSox Weekly Recap: August 18-25, 2024
The past week has been a rollercoaster for the Everett AquaSox, the High-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. The team has shown resilience and determination, with some standout performances that highlight their potential.
Pitching Highlights
One of the most notable performances came from right-handed starting pitcher Nick Payero. On August 24, Payero delivered six shutout innings against the Vancouver Canadians, allowing only one hit while striking out five and walking two. This was his second scoreless start in three outings with Everett, accumulating 19 strikeouts over 16 innings.
Another pitching highlight came from Rhett Lowder, who dominated in his debut with the Louisville Bats. Lowder capped his outing by fanning Gwinnett's Sandy Leon in the seventh inning on a 95-mph four-seam fastball that caught the corner of the zone.
Close Games and Extra Innings
The AquaSox have been involved in some nail-biting games recently. On August 24, they managed to squeeze by the Vancouver Canadians with a 3-2 win, thanks to strong pitching from Jimmy Kingsbury and an inning of work from Juan Burgos. However, the next day saw the Canadians exact revenge, defeating the AquaSox 3-2 in 11 innings. Despite the loss, the game was a testament to the team's ability to compete in tight situations.
Looking Ahead
The AquaSox conclude their series against the Vancouver Canadians on Sunday, August 25, with Marcelo Perez on the mound. Following this series, they will travel to face the Eugene Emeralds for six games starting on August 27. The team returns home on September 2 to kick off their final homestand of the season.
Minor League Oddities
In other Minor League news, July saw some remarkable performances and oddities. The Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos scored 36 runs over a doubleheader against the Chattanooga Lookouts, while the Single-A Inland Empire 66ers had an 11-run inning against the Lake Elsinore Storm. Additionally, Rob Brantly, a catcher for the Triple-A Durham Bulls, took the mound for the first time since 2018 and secured a save with just three pitches.
The Everett AquaSox continue to show promise and grit as they navigate the challenges of the Minor League season. With their upcoming games, fans can expect more exciting performances and close contests.
