Down East Wood Ducks News: August 9 - August 15, 2024

The Down East Wood Ducks, the Single-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, have been navigating a bittersweet final season at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, North Carolina. As the team prepares to move to Spartanburg, South Carolina in 2025, fans and players alike are savoring the last moments at their beloved ballpark.

Doubleheader Against the Salem Red Sox

The Wood Ducks hosted the Salem Red Sox for a doubleheader on July 12th. The first game saw the Red Sox take an early lead, but the Wood Ducks fought back, ultimately splitting the doubleheader.

Bark in the Park

On July 9th, the Wood Ducks hosted the Salem Red Sox for "Bark in the Park," a game that allowed fans to bring their pets. The Wood Ducks started strong, with Echedry Vargas making it to first base on a wild pitch. However, the Red Sox managed to secure a win.

Camp Day

The following day, the Wood Ducks faced the Red Sox again for "Camp Day." Despite a spirited performance, the Wood Ducks fell to the Red Sox.

Christmas in July

The Wood Ducks also hosted the Salem Red Sox for a "Christmas in July" themed game, which was part of a doubleheader. The Wood Ducks showed their festive spirit but ultimately split the series.

These games have been a testament to the team's dedication and the fans' unwavering support. Longtime fans like Mike Grady, Doug and Anne Barnes, and Donald Speight have been regulars at Grainger Stadium, cherishing every moment of the final season. Mike Grady, known for his enthusiasm and generosity in giving foul balls to kids, encapsulated the sentiment, saying, "It feels like home to me."

The move to Spartanburg in 2025 marks a significant change for the Wood Ducks. The new stadium, planned to be built in downtown Spartanburg, will offer a fresh start for the team. However, the departure from Kinston is a poignant reminder of the end of an era. Fans have expressed their sadness, with one Reddit user commenting, "Damn the Wood Ducks (former Indians) were my childhood team. Went to so many games at Grainger Stadium. Sad day for Eastern Carolina baseball fans."

As the Wood Ducks continue their final season at Grainger Stadium, fans are encouraged to attend the remaining games and celebrate the team's legacy. With only a month left in the regular season and 16 home games remaining, there's still plenty of time to experience the magic of Minor League Baseball in Kinston.

The Down East Wood Ducks' colorful logo and vibrant spirit will undoubtedly continue to inspire fans, both in their current home and in their future endeavors in Spartanburg.
